At CruxOCM, we believe in the power of continuous and discrete control. However, there have been some misunderstandings about our flagship product, pipeBOT™, and how it really works. While some may view it as a simple application of Advanced Process Control (APC) to pipelines, there is much more to the story. Yes—Crux applies APC. But no—pipeBOT™ is not just another APC solution.

What Is pipeBOT™?

For Control Room Operators: pipeBOT™ acts like a helpful co-pilot, always ready to make an operator’s job easier. Imagine adaptive cruise control on a long drive. Operators stay in full control and can take back command at any time by adjusting any set point—just like tapping the brake.

For Control System Engineers: For those outside pipeline companies, pipeBOT™ is a fit-for-purpose product combining discrete and continuous control. It optimizes operator actions using APC, hydraulic models, and rules-based engines built for pipeline operations.

For Automation Engineers: pipeBOT™ works like an autopilot tool. It applies Advanced Process Control—inspired by refining and chemical plants—to manage complex pipeline processes seamlessly and efficiently.

Continuous and Discrete Control in Pipeline Automation

Let’s look deeper at pipeline control systems.

  • Discrete control executes single commands, triggered only by external events or changes. These are on/off-type actions managed through digital signals.
  • Continuous control manages smoothly changing parameters such as flow rate or batch transitions. Each command follows another in short intervals to maintain stability.

Traditional APC systems are broad and usually embedded in Distributed Control Systems (DCS) across industries. Pipelines, however, use Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), which lacks embedded APC.

That’s where pipeBOT™ reshapes the pipeline operations. It integrates both discrete and continuous control, abstracting complex commands into one adaptive pipeline automation system that achieves:
